FAIR TRADE VACANCY

Project assistant to be based in Mainz, Germany

NEWS! is the Network of European Worldshops co-ordinating the co-operation between Worldshops all over Western Europe. The Network consists of 15 national Worldshop associations in 13 countries all together representing about 2.500 Worldshops in Europe.

The aims of NEWS! are:
· To link Worldshops and Worldshop organisations throughout Europe.
· To initiate, direct and promote joint campaigns and co-ordinate Europe-wide activities initiated by the national Worldshop associations with the aim of promoting Fair Trade in general and the Worldshops in particular. The activities are aimed at the general public as well as at the media and politicians in Europe.
· To stimulate and support the development of national Worldshop associations in the enlarged Europe.
· To work together with other organisations in the field of Fair Trade.

NEWS! is seeking a project assistant (70%) to support the development and implementation within an international team of a three years awareness raising campaign emphasising on:
· Labour rights (especially child labour) on the examples of the cacao and football industries
· Target group mainly children age 8-12
· Increasing the visibility of Fair Trade and Worldshops
· Influencing decision makers in policy and industry

The general aim of the project is to raise, through innovative activities, awareness among the target group about the problems caused by the current North-South trade relationship and to inform about Fair Trade as an alternative.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated, well-organised, articulate person, able to work under pressure, with campaign and education experience, able to manage their own time and work priorities. We further expect:
· Fluency in spoken and written English. Fluency in, or a good working knowledge of French, Spanish or Italian is desirable
· Educated to university level or equivalent
· Knowledge of youngsters and/or children as target groups of awareness raising
· Excellent communication and social skills
· Pedagogical experience
· Computer skills (including new information technologies)
· A good understanding of Fair Trade and Worldshops as well as world trade and North-South relations is desirable

Tasks
· Assist in developing strategies in approaching the target group
· Assist in developing campaign material and action models
· Strengthen national members’ capacities to participate in the project
· Co-ordinate national participation and momentum in the campaign
· Coordinate exchange of information with partners
· General organisational and administrative tasks

It will be a three years contract starting in June 2004. For the first year the 70% post is secured for the second and third year 50% are secured we are working on obtaining the remaining 20%.

The office will be based in the historical university city of Mainz, Germany close to Frankfurt.
